Without schools providing lunch and structure to children’s days, a growing number of vulnerable families will struggle to cover the costs of meals and childcare over the long break. The Food Foundation, a charity and think tank, reports that four million children now live in households facing food poverty, a number which has doubled over the past year, while it impacts more than ninemillion adults. But for some, already facing overstretched budgets, the outlook is less sunny.
